EN 1634 Regulations

European standard for testing fire door sets

The documents on EN 1634, is a standard that outlines the fire resistance and smoke control tests for door and shutter assemblies, openable windows, and components of building hardware. It presents fire resistance testing for door and shutter assemblies and openable windows. It is designed to help improve the protection of people using a building which is why our doors meet these regulations so you can have the best protection for a building’s occupants. Whether it’s for commercial or domestic use.

Fire-rated doors provide three main essential functions in a building:

They serve as a barrier to the spread of fire, help protect against smoke inhalation, and provide an exit route in the event of an emergency.

Upon evacuation, fire-resistant doors should remain operational to provide additional protection for fire personnel while they are extinguishing the blaze.

How Fire Doors Are Tested

Prior to testing, the samples are delivered to the test facility and left to adjust to the venue’s environment. The door set manufacturer then sends a comprehensive description of the unit to the laboratory, enabling technicians to conduct a thorough examination.

The doors are then securely fitted into a structural opening to replicate their regular deployment in the furnace, such as brick block masonry or plasterboard.

Thermocouples are fixed to the external face of the door and frame, in order to measure the temperature of the unexposed face. Additionally, a radiometer shall be set up to take readings of the radiation emitted by the sample during the testing period.

Once all the necessary procedures are finished, the physical test can commence. As an example, an FD30 fire door, needs to have a required duration for the test in the furnace of a minimum of thirty minutes. However, additional information about its performance can be gathered if the duration surpasses the minimum requirement if it can work for 36 minutes or 20% more than the baseline.

Overview of regulations for UK Fire Doors

Fire doors can be subjected to evaluation against either BS476 or BS EN 1634, both of which are applicable to the standard for assessing the fire resistance of building materials and buildings. The testing protocol the furnace differs from EN 1634 requires a higher threshold primarily in its approach to air pressure compaired to BS 476, which yields a less stringent assessment. This is why the EN 1634 meets UKCA regulations while the BS 476 fire doors cannot.

Now that the UK has left the EU, the CE mark is no longer recognised as a certification badge in the UK. To address this, the UKCA mark has been introduced and is being accepted as a valid indication of product conformity, alongside the CE mark in 2021. From January 2022 onwards, UKCA marking is required for products to be accepted in Great Britain.

It is important to point out that this provision is applicable only to the ‘Great Britain’ portion of the UK; CE marking will remain effective in Northern Ireland.

Drop down seals

The acceptable specifications for a fire-only door require a gap of 8-10mm at the bottom of the door. For a fire & smoke door, however, the gap should be 3mm or less; if a greater gap is present, a drop seal should be employed.

Intumescent glazing tape

For Fire Doors, a gap of 2-4mm should be present around the top and sides of the door. However, for Fire and Smoke Doors, the gap should be 3mm.

Door hinges

Fire doors require hinges must have a minimum thickness of 3mm and must be specifically designed for fire doors, which will be indicated by a fire rating symbol proving it has been tested.
