PAS 24 EXPLAINED

PAS 24 is a security standard that requires a product to undergo thorough testing and assessment in order to achieve high security performance levels. The goal is to make homes and commercial buildings more resistant to opportunistic criminals.

PAS 24 is a minimum performance specification and, like most British Standards, does not include grades for security performance. This means that doors which are tested to the specifications of the standard either pass or fail.

PAS 24 ACCREDITED MEETS SECURED BY DESIGN STANDARDS

The Secured By Design (SBD) initiative is a police-led security initiative that seeks to improve the security of buildings and their immediate surroundings. The initiative provides a framework for designing, building and maintaining safe environments in which people can live, work, shop and visit.

This doorset and window has been certified to meet the enhanced security performance requirements as outlined in PAS 24 : 2016. This standard is applicable to doorsets and windows that are intended to offer a level of security suitable for dwellings and other buildings that are exposed to comparable risk. The certification for this product is held with BMTrada Cert 050/312.

Dual Certificated for Enhanced security rating and Fire Performance.

Dual Certification is a doorset that has undergone rigorous industry standard tests for fire resistance and security, and has independent third-party certification for both Fire and Security on a single scope of certification. This provides peace of mind that your doorset is able to provide the highest level of protection in the event of a fire or security breach.

The security scope refers to the doorset name and type reflected in the security certificate. Other performance requirements may be needed depending on the doorset’s required performance.

In order to be approved by SBD, the doorset must be certified by a third party for both security and fire performance.

SECURED BY DESIGN

The Secured by Design (SBD) initiative is a crime reduction initiative led by police forces in the United Kingdom. The initiative promotes security measures for new and existing homes, businesses and other community buildings.

SBD is owned by the UK police service and is supported by a number of government and industry partners. This initiative employs a multifaceted approach to crime prevention, including design and security standards for new build and refurbished homes, security products, and crime reduction advice and guidance.

The goal of Secured By Design is to improve the physical security of structures by using security products that meet SBD standards. These products include doors, windows, locks, and walling systems.

PAS 24 Certification

Residents of buildings with flat entrance doorsets often feel vulnerable to crime. In some cases, exterior gates are installed across front entrance doorsets, which can impede the fire service’s ability to access the building.

Doorsets that have been tested to recognised security standards (PAS 24 : 2016 or similar) and are dual certified can give residents the reassurance they need without having to resort to extra security measures.

Designing doorsets that prevent crime has long been associated with social housing in both existing buildings and new construction.

The Secured by Design (SBD) initiative is a police-led crime reduction strategy that adopts principles to reduce crime and the fear of crime.

Dual Certification

The doorset must have third-party certification for security in order to be approved by SBD. When a flat entrance doorset is required to be fire resistant, SBD has advocated for the doorset design specification to be the same for security and fire resistance.

This is dual certification and applies to both existing residential buildings and new buildings under Approved Document Q (ADQ) for Security in Dwellings.

In every case, the doorset design specification that is fire tested must match the samples that were tested for security performance, and this must be consistent throughout manufacture. This is because the fire resistance of a door can be compromised by security features that are added to it.
